Szalagavato.The dress.

In Hungary and Romania there is a tradition in High School called Szalagavato. Of course there are some differences between the two countries, but basically it is the same. Girls dress up in wedding gowns, boys put on their tuxedo and they dance. This dance has to be really fancy and the preparations start earlier.
In Romania, well at least where I live, 11th graders dance for the 12th graders, so the whole event is a present for the students who will graduate. The event is not about the dance, this is only a tiny part of it but somehow girls cannot be bothered with anything else. In our school only 10 pairs had the chance to dance at this big event, so there was a  big competition, a sort of a pre-selection  right at the beginning of everything. I was very happy when they announced the final results, because I got in!
In Hungary this dance is for everyone who graduates that year. Honestly I don't know much about it, but I heard that they can choose their own gowns (we were given the dresses). One of my ex-classmates who moved to Hungary asked me to make a post about wedding dresses because she doesn't know what to wear. She said she would like to wear a high-low gown but she still needs advice and I thought this is a great idea, I don't even think I showed you the pictures from my Szalagavato. I mean the one where I danced.

So as I told you our dresses were given to us, I bet a lot of us would have chosen something else. But still, I think we all looked really good. Here are some of the dresses we wore, from a closer look.

I think what is important to bear in mind when choosing the dress is not only the style and the fitting but we have to be attentive because it must be comfortable as well. As you can see I had a crinoline because the dress was too big. I know it looks amazing, but it's hard to dance in. I mean my partner could barely find my legs in that big dress, so there were times we just couldn't dance at all. It takes practice to learn the dance in this dress as well. So I wouldn't advice anyone to choose the Cinderella type of gown (baby doll). There is also the A line wedding gown, which in my opinion is too simple, but it fits the occasion. The high-low wedding gown would be good but it only looks good when it has a long train and that is a big no if you want to dance. So what type of dress should you choose? Well there is the so-called empire, the mermaid (only if it's loose) or the sheath. You cannot go wrong with these. The fabric, the embellishment, the neckline can be anything that you like and that goes with your style and body shape. Here are some beautiful dresses I picked up for this occasion to show you. You can find more at this link, all pictures are taken from there!

SHOES!!! This is a very important part of the whole outfit because you can have the most beautiful dress in the world, if you choose the wrong shoes, you will suffer a lot, you might even have to cancel the dance, or worst, fall on stage. No one ever wants that kind of embarrassment! That is why you have to wear very comfortable shoes. Honestly, mine were the most hideous ones I have ever seen, but I could dance in them, they were comfortable not only for 10 minutes, but for the whole show. We were dressed in this outfit not only for few minutes, we had to wait for hours in the wedding gowns. So if you want to wear high heels, you should choose something that has thicker heels and/or ankle strap. And honestly, don't be choosy! I searched a lot for the perfect shoes and didn't get them. None of us girls found the perfect pair that looked gorgeous and still was bearable.

I know there are some pretty amazing white pumps, but that's just not an option for this kind of event. You have to wear white ankle strap shoes if you want to survive this dance!

Accessories! Well you can wear anything you want, but you have to be very careful. You don't want to ruin the dress, so you shouldn't wear big rings, you don't want to get hit in the face by a big giant medallion when you twirl or turn. Wear something descent and nice! And have fun! :)

 Have an amazing weekend!
xoxo,
Saci
